Total Orthotic & Prosthetic Solutions

FAQ'S

Are your practitioners certified?

Yes, currently all of our practitioners are board certified through The American Board for Certification in Prosthetics and Orthotics, as well as state licensed through the Texas Board of Orthotics and Prosthetics.

Can I choose my own provider for these services or do I have to go where my doctor sends me?

Yes, it is your right as a patient to choose where you want to have your care provided. However, many times, you may be sent to a specific provider because of your insurance company or who they contract with in your community. Medical treatment can be very expensive and the goal is for you to receive the best possible service at the most affordable price.

Do I need to make an appointment?

Yes, an appointment is preferred, as we are a clinic and have regularly scheduled patients. We want to be sure that all of our patients receive the necessary time and attention they deserve to meet their orthotic and prosthetic needs.

How soon after my surgery am I ready to be fit for a prosthesis?

This will vary per individual based on how quickly your amputation site heals after surgery. A normal recovery takes about 4 to 8 weeks. Once healed, you can expect to begin the process of receiving your prosthesis. You will also participate in physical therapy to start walking again.

Is it difficult to learn how to use a prosthesis?

This all depends on your specific situation, your overall health, and the type of amputation you have received. There are above knee amputations and below knee amputations. Each one requires a different amount of energy and skill to be able to walk. Overall, many patients are very motivated to get back to a normal life as soon as possible and will do whatever it takes to regain that activity level.

Your doctor will recommend physical therapy after you receive your prosthesis to help you in this process, so that you can return to a sense of normalcy as soon as possible.

What are some examples of custom made braces?

A custom made brace can be constructed for almost all body parts. Some of the most common custom made braces we make are AFO’s, ankle-foot orthosis (or-tho-sis), KAFO’s, knee-ankle-foot orthosis, and TLSO’s, thoracic-lumbar-sacral (thor-aa-sick lum-bar sac-ral) orthosis. An ankle-foot orthosis is used to treat medical conditions such as drop foot or ankle instability. A knee-ankle-foot orthosis is generally used for patients with severe leg weakness. A thoracic-lumbar-sacral orthosis is used after back surgery to stabilize and support the back for proper healing or to treat severe non-surgical spinal injuries.

What does a prosthesis look like and how does it stay on?

A prosthesis is made to look as life like as possible. Depending on your preference, we can match the prosthesis to the color and shape of your other leg or make it a unique design that is to your liking. There are different ways a prosthesis can stay in place. You can choose to utilize a suction, or you can use a pin system, which requires you to wear a silicone liner on your limb with a pin at the end that fits and latches into your prosthesis.

What type of payments do you accept?

We accept cash, check, Mastercard and Visa. If you are not able to make your full payment, financial arrangements can be made upon request.

What types of braces do you carry?

We carry braces for most body parts, including neck, shoulders, back, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot. Depending on your medical condition, your doctor will give you a prescription for the necessary brace. It can be prefabricated or may need to be custom made.

Will my insurance cover these services?

Most insurance companies will cover our services, typically anywhere from 70 to 100 percent, depending on the item and type of individual coverage you have with your insurance. Many times, a deductible must be met before the insurance company will provide any benefits. We will verify with your insurance company the benefits they provide and notify you in advance of any financial responsibility you may be accountable for based on your insurance coverage.
